The melodic lines in Dance Sideways, particularly those of the clarinet, are inspired by melodies from Big Band jazz music. The texture of the piece is much like that of a string quartet, with the clarinet taking the place of the first violin. While the end product does not sound particularly like jazz, the title is meant to pay homage to the same Big Band jazz tradition.
